My new blog

Owwkaaay...so I started this master-after-master programme a month ago and it is really cool. Lots of different workshops, international teaching staff and international students. Since I have to do research and I started to collect all projects that interest me and to make it myself a little with keeping an overview I created a blog. For anybody that might be interested here is the link;) Hope you guys like it if you decide to pay a visit!

MEGANE

I just finished watching this really beautiful film called "MEGANE" (2007) directed by Naoko Ogigami

There isn't much story to it and it's very minimal but hey, the cinematography is beautiful!!!!

1 Year!

Heyyyyyyy!!!!!

So I'm a few days late but this blog is over 1 year old now! Isn't that exciting? Does anyone have any ideas on how we could make it better? I've been kind of consumed by school stuff lately so I haven't had much time to work on the blog, but I'd like to get more involved in it again so it's more active or whatnot :D

Ok yay just thought I'd share that little bit of news.

Hi hi hi!

long time no see!
I am writing my thesis proposal as I speak and I am dying....to sleep.

It's been about 36 hours so far without any sleep! Woohoo but I'm sure y'all how how it feels,
I mean...studying design = no sleep, from at least what I've seen in the past!

Anyways, I am putting together an exhibition, with all the photos that were taken at the same time:
Sorry I didn't announce the time here, but hopefully there will be a next one!

check out the photos, they are quite nice!

What If....

I learned how to make cute litle accordian books (and stab-bound books), and it is f-u-n, cheap, and easy.
WHAT IF I made a number of tiny little books (one for each of us interested in this idea) and sent them around and we each took a page in each book and did something to it, and then once we filled up the books we could each have one?

y/n?

:D

Hi guys

It's been a while, sorry.
But soooooooooooooooooooooooo if any of you are still around reading this, I just have a question that I am curious about.
School started again for me this week, and with the beginning of classes we were introduced to a school wide, mandatory (I think...) project that is not for a grade, but it being discussed in all classes and it creating quite a stir. Each student is required to make some sort of message to the future president on a piece of paper, and we will hang each throughout the school, and eventually mail them to the President. Last year we had a project that every student in any design/illustration/comic class had to participate in. I think they are a really interesting idea and a nice change of pace, but they always seem to get a lot of mixed reactions.

Do you guys ever have school wide projects like that? Do people at your schools have strong reactions either way?

Ok, sorry abut my strange question but it's just making me wonder.

allrighty, BYE!

Design For the Other 90%

Hi Guys,

I went to Minneapolis over the weekend and when I was there I saw some of the new exhibitions at the Walker museum, and although you smarties might already know if it, I think some of you might be interested in Design for the Other 90%.
Check it out! :D

SORRY GUYS!

Hello hello.

So I still have the collabo piece...

I had finals, then I went to Basel for three weeks for business then I came back to Japan for a job.
Now the job is over and I am finally free!!! So I can do all the stuff now and I will send it to you as soon as I can...
so who is still on the list that hasn't gotten it???

Also I made a book and it would be cool if we can send it along... I made it light so it shouldn't be too expensive to send it around.

Antwerp Fashion Academy Show 2008

I was totally out of inspiration so i decided to go to the fashion show of the fashion academy of Antwerp. This school with international students is rather known in the fashion industry and the quality should be really high level...i did see a lot of cool stuff so to share some images with ya all here are some links...i especially enjoyed the kids collection and the show with the giant gorilla heads was really cool...but still a lot of other designs, really elegant and chic...

this one is of a photograher that was there...the pics aren't that great but he shows a lot of stuff:
lots of pics

there aren't any pics on the site except for backstage pics so:

So yesterday I got bored and I made a collage that could be the start of a new collaboration piece if anyone is interested in giving it a go!  I didn't want to just send it off to whoever because I'm not sure how busy everyone is and I don't want to force anyone to worry about it.  But if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll send it your way!

I'll try to scan it sometime soon, also :D

PS:  Euro 2008, I'm sure some of you are watching, right?!?!  I'm addicted!  The Spain/Russia game was SO GOOD!

GOT IT!

I got the collaboration piece in the mail today! Hooray.
You said I can do anything to it...right?

Well then, SOMETHING will be done....and it will be mailed to whomever.

dutch design

everyones seems to be pretty impressed by dutch design at the moment and wanting to go on exchange to the netherlands. I would love to help you guys or give you information about other schools here in holland but yeah you really just have to look a little for yourself and see what interests you. In my experience and as i heard from other exchange students the dutch design part, yes you'll be exposed to it, but then whether you learn something from it really comes from your part and how you make use of it. It also depends what school you go to. I mean i don't know how other schools go about it, with mine it's... yea i dont really know how to explain it but its not like they teach you how to make dutch design. But exchanges are great i'm all for it, plus if you go here you do get the opportunity to meet other people who do make great design, and i would make full use of visiting as many studios as you can like experimental jetset, 75b, dumbar etc.etc. I lost track of what my point was to this post. Good luck though :D and yuh if i can be of any help or anything let me know.

dutch design & fabrica

Hey just wanted to add something quickly because some of you seem to want to go abroad...i am looking for a way to do that aswell actually but i will have to figure it out myself since i have become to old to stay in school for much longer and i can't get funding that eassily anymore...

...the netherlands are great i think...i visit a lot of seminars and lectures about new media and topology/mapping...everytime (just like yesterday in fact:) ) there are some dutch people with great stuff...as a belgian student i have always looked more at the dutch design than what my own country has to offer since we are still little slower:)

anyway in the future i would love to work with some dutch people i got to know a bit...the person i am going to start a graphic studio with also went to a dutch college and she is full of it...a friend of mine is going to talk to her because she also wants to go to the netherlands next year...so if you ask me dutch design schools are really interesting...

I have read some stuff about Fabrica in Yutsak's post...i have been to a lecture of the head of the graphic design department...omar vulpinari...i must say i expected more from him and fabrica...i found their work a bit to much in the advertising business and it wasn't that spectacular...they just have great contacts/clients with a lot of money most of the time which isn't that interesting to me as a graphic designer interested in typography, mapping, ... he also seemed to say that he looks a lot at how a portfolio is presented...for example if you send him a box where he has to put his head in to see pictures of your work...the box would be original enough to remember you and the chance would be great he would pick that person...i kinda have a problem with that because i know some people who wouldn't get picked because they would send in this classic styled portfolio...because they want their work presented in a sort of way that draws attention to the work and not the protfolio, mmm the packaging (hope this is clear what i mean to say:s)...so i was worried that he doesn't really look at the work itself...but just at the packaging...anyway you may correct me if anybody thinks i am wrong...i am already too old to apply so doesn't matter to me that much...just like to have more discussions on design...and the education of it...i think that is important...to share opinions that is:)

O.k. first of all...sorry people that i have made all of you wait...but in this master year it suddenly got stressy and busy as hell...i also contributed to an exhibition in Brussels since it is 50 years ago that we had the world expo in the city...even had to do interview with german press about that...which was funny especially that little moment of silence between your own explanation of your work+'and if there are any questions...?' and the actual fire of questions...

Anyway no time a lot of stress and well than that colaboration piece gets lost somewhere between the clutter of that desktop and a few feet arround it:s

The good news is I just pushed myself in doing just something quick so i can send it to the next person...what did i do?...euhm well...just like Eline i found it a bit hard to do something...but cartography and mapping seems to become the theme so...i transformed one of the basic things you find on city maps...'the you are here circle'...i made a rule to find a place for it on the page...based on the 'golden section'...and instead of being a mark on the map i tried to make it more of a window...

i couldn't put as much time in as i wanted and therefore didn't do what i had planned (adding a whole extra, transparant layer...) but hope you all like it a bit in some way...

Long time no see.

Hello folks!

Sorry I haven't really written much in the last couple of weeks....
I had an stress allergy (I didn't know such thing exists!) for a week,
then I went to Berlin for a week and then to Milan for two weeks.

O o o good times I've been having!

Stockholm weather is nice. It's warm and I can go out with a thin jacket (yes, not warm enough for just tshirts yet!)

I was in Milan during the Milan Design Week 2008. Saw some good stuff.....to all the Dutch people here, YOU ALL ROCK - I was really impressed by the works from Eindhoven Design Academy and also other Dutch designs....so I have basically decided that will be my next destination.

Fabrica was also doing some cool stuff....is or has anyone applied?? I am thinking about taking a year off to apply....or possibly do an exchange if it's not TOO late. So if there is anyone who wants to come to Konstfack (..maybe you, Eline?) We can exchange :)))) Hehehe....

I am still looking at some schools that are still accepting applications...so let me know if you know of any!

It's been a while!

Soooo since it's been kind of dull on this blog lately, I figured I should post something.

Hmmm.  Well, Yesterday I got to go "behind the scenes" at the Walker Art Center and talk with their senior designers and design fellows, which was really interesting and it motivated me to work even harder.  If you're interested, definitely look into their fellowship program :)

And tonight Judy Chicago ("the dinner party" lady, feminist artist) came to talk at my school which was ... wellll..... interesting.  I thought it was fascinating and a great talk, but my sister thought it was bad and I think it may have pushed some buttons or pissed off some people.

Anything exciting (or boring, whatever) going on with any of you?

Classes!

Hey Guys,

so I registered for my classes today, and I'm really desperately hoping I get in to each of them.  I'll hopefully be taking 4 studio classes and 1 liberal arts:  electronic pre press, motion graphics, print paper books techniques, and publication design.  Liberal art would be a class called myth and ritual.  It'll be super intense but I'm really looking forward to it!

Do any of you guys choose classes soon or anything like that?  F-U-N!!!!!! (or maybe it's just me that thinks its fun, haaaa ha)

BEST APPLICATION EVER

maybe not.  But it is super helpful.

Anyway, it's this application called Plie which a classmate told me about. You can download it for free here and if you have a document that you want to print in a french-fold format, you export it as a pdf and then drag the pdf into this application and it will reformat you a whole new pdf that is ready to print, French-fold style!!! YAY

....I might have posted about this before. So if I did, sorry!

HELLLPPPP

I'm not sure if any of you can help me with this but ANYTHING you know may be useful and I really appreciate it if anyone replies to this post. I want to go on an exchange and I was only told today that they had changed the rules for exchanging. So I thought I still had a lot of time to get everything sorted out, now it turns out that I need to have it all sorted out (paperwork and stuff) by April 15. So now I'm giong through all the schools and places I might want to go to. But it is incrediblly hard to decide on something, and I also don't know how the schools are there and the programs and what there all is to learn (As in is it directed at graphic design, is it a good place to learn typography, that kinda stuff) So I was hoping maybe you guys have some insight and can help me out.

Here are some of the places I was considering:

Athens School of Fine Arts, Greece
Universidad de Barcelona, Facultad de Belles Artes, Spain
Universitat Autonma de Barcelona, Ecola Massana, Spain
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, School of Visual Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark
Konstfack/University College of Arts, Crafts & Design, Stockholm, Sweden
Kunstuniversitat Linz, Mesiterklasse Experimentelle Visuelle Gestaltung, Linz, Austria

Okay well ANYTHINGGGG you know and wanna share is welcome!

WORK WORTH DOING

So yesterday night I went to see the second design lecture, from Work Worth Doing. I've got to say, I thought their presentation was actually pretty dull in itself, they were just reading off a script kind of, which is never fun. Their work, on the other hand was really, really fascinating to me. They choose to take on controversial issues such as water and energy conservation and address them through a design perspective (although sometimes the graphic design aspect was a little difficult for me to pinpoint).

Anyway, they had really fascinating and innovative ideas on sustainability and things like that, and the most interesting part for me was their Q&A after their lecture which was really inspiring.

If you guys are interested in politically/socially driven work, definitely give their stuff a look, (they worked on Massive Change with Bruce Mau, too!).

Time for a post

Hey there...it's been some time since my last real post here so I thought well...

...o.k. it's just some links I find interesting:
1) Bureau of Inverse Technology
They have all kinds of mediaprojects but the best thing about it is that you can buy "kits" from them...like for exemple a pirate-radio-kit to install your own local radiostation for your neighbouhood or campus or whatever...

the BIT website

2) For all those lucky bastards that live in or close to New York, there seems to be a great exhibition on new media and cartography and other interesting stuff at the MoMA..."Design and the Elastic Mind"...good thing though is that they also made an online expo!!!!!...and yes the site looks a bit spectacular too:)

Get elastic here!

O.k. that's it...now I am going to try and enjoy the rain here...see ya...and Y your picture will be comming to ya soon;)

Help needed!

Hey guys,

I am making this book called "connected: different: I am here."(it will change, probably), where I am collecting photos that are taken at exactly the same time everywhere on earth!!! I forgot to mention it in this blog, but it would be great to include some photos taken by you guys.....

The photo will be of the sky above you. If you want to include buildings that's cool, but at least 70% of the composition should probably be the sky.....

The time is at midnight in Europe (11pm in London on March 9th) on March 10...so TODAY! It would be midnight for a lot of countries in Europe....and that would be 7PM in New York (sorry for people in the US but that's the best I can give...I guess you could subtract or add some hours to it!?)

It would be wonderful if you could participate. If I get papers and printing sponsored then I will send out copies but if not, I will make a website with all the photos and the names!

If you could send your photo to sakaney@gmail.com

that would be wonderfullll

cheers,

Yuta

Si Scott

Well everyone seems to be making posts about artists and such, so I figured I would join in the fun.

I don't know if any of you guys know Si Scott . He is a graphic designer from the UK, originally from Leeds and makes some great work through combining good design with typography and illustrations. He draws everything by hand with a fineliner (the typography as well) and scans these drawings in later. A lot of his work seems to be inspired by music.  I recommend you guys to take a look at him if you haven't already, especially since I've noticed some of you are really into illustrations. He has a good balance in his work, and it's very aesthetic.

Marian Bantjes Lecture

Last night I got to see Marian Bantjes speak at the Walker as part of their Design Insights series.

Her work is really beautiful, super ornamental but often really structured and gridded although it doesn't always appear that way. It was really interesting to hear her talk because she never really classified herself as a designer. She used to have a design studio that was rather successful, but once she left to do this it seems like she stopped calling herself a designer. So that was intersting because it kind of made me think "well what exactly do you call her work? Is it more illustration, design, typography, what isssss ittttttt?".

Oh, and one part I found especially fascinating was how she goes about creating patterns and parts for her patterns. It's a whole intricate and amazing process that seems to make so much sense once you hear it, and it made me think "ooh, good idea, I'll have to try something like that!". She kind of creates a series of pieces like a puzzle but they're interchangeable and inter-lockable in many different ways so you can create billions of combinations and patterns out of a few key pieces. Really cool stuff.

Anyway, yes so it was a nice little lecture, and soon you'll be able to watch it here along with other past lecturers like Daniel Eatock!

Next week is Work Worth Doing, so hopefully that'll be interesting as well!

fashionzz

Wow I haven't posted on here in ages... Better make this a good one...

Hokai, so. I think fashion illustration is the most beautiful thing. There's so much style and character and beauty to it. None of this crappy clip-art looking bullshit like a lot of current illustration.

Ch-ch-ch-check it out!!

Collaboration

ALRIGHT! I added something to it now I just have to upload a photo which I will do soon, and then I'm going to put it on the mail to go to the next person tomorrowwww :D I did find it kind of hard to think of something to add, I think that is becuase we always get assignments telling you what to do, so if you just have to go for it and do something I sit there thinking, what would it add? what would it mean? I just had to get it into my head that this doesn't have to be an end result. Anyways I'm going to photograph it and put photos up soon. :D

In Progress Advice?

Heyyyyyy everyone!

I've been working on this project for weeks and weeks in stages, and now a final poster image is due. Last week I had these two versions I was really happy with, but I had to change everything entirely for this week, and I'm not feeling too good about what I've come up with. Anyway, I am supposed to print it tomorrow and I would loveeeeeeeee it if anyone had some advice or constructive criticism for me. We had to choose a section of the school's library and create a "collage" poster that incorporated the text, abstract and representational imagery. I feel like I am either explaining this way too much or not enough, sorry. I think I'm at the point where I have been looking at it for so long that I have no idea if its good or if it's terrible, hahahahha.

Ok yeah so this is a screen grab of what I have so far, (I'm sure I'll be working on it for a couple more hours) and I'd love to hear any input anyone might have.
:)

(thanks!)

Lots of Things

Ooh, I love seeing all the updates, it's so fun!

So far I have addresses from Myself, Eline, Filip, and Gabriel. And Yuta's will possibly be coming soon. Once I get Yuta's, I will make a simple text document of each of our addresses and send it to each of us participating.

If you have an issue with this, let me know quickly so I can fix it.

Oh yeah, and I sent the document to Eline a few days ago, so she'll be getting it next, how excitinggggg!

YO.

Hey guys,

Sorry I have been so ignorant and inactive here....
I've had just too much to do in the last couple of days!! But now the workload is over and I can relax for a day or two!

I will be exhibiting a book at the National Museum in Stockholm from February 21-May 22 so if you are around let me know!!!!

So this collaboration idea sounds really good...is it going around already? Well if it's not too late I would like to get involved too. Perhaps the last person could maybe just write my name and the address on it or something?

Stockholm is full of lovely 70's-like design and typography and I am loving it!!!

GA, can I put myself on that map too?!

Cheers mates,

Stage 1

Hey guysssssssss

So here is STAGE 1 of our lovely little collaborative project. I made it out of tape. I think the paper size will be 11 x 14 or something like that, I've got to check the envelope. But I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow!

collaboration piece

So I was thinking about this collaboration piece, and I think it would be handy that whenever you added something to the piece you take a picture of it and we post it up here. That way those who don't have the piece yet can keep track of what is going on and how it's growing. Also it's just handy in case something messes up or someone spills coffee over it or it gets lost on sea... any of those kind of things haha. But that way we actually keep a record of the growing process of it as well. I thought it was a good idea...most probably it's already been said by someone and I didn't pay attention. Anyways, that's all ^________^.

PROJECT IDEA!

Ok sooooo all of a sudden a few days ago I had this idea for a project we could do. And then I had another idea. And thennnn I started getting really excited about it. So, I'll propose my ideas here and please let me know if you'd be interested.
It could be really fun :D

Idea 1: I was thinking..... we could start with one piece of paper, let's just say I'd start. And I'd take this piece of paper and do a little something with a letraset on it. And then, I'd stick the piece of paper with the design on it, and a piece of the letraset into an envelope and sent it on over to whoever wanted to be next. Then, that person would take the piece of paper, and also use the letraset (if they wanted to) and then use or add some sort of other thing... cut something from a paper.... add something, anything. And they'd maybe add something small and flat to the envelope for the next person to use. It's just continue until we were done... or well.. I'm not too sure how we'd finish this one up (but suggestions are awesome)!

Idea 2: Kind of building off of idea 1, I thought it might be fun if instead of one piece of paper, we could do something like a small sketchbook or something (they make really cute 3x4 moleskein ones!) But, since that might be more expensive to mail, I figured we could choose a standard size and then as long as each new page is that size, we can use whatever materials we want, and then bind it into a book at the end of the process. But it'd be kind of an open collaboration thing, sending back and forth, etc.

Ok, so I'm thinking it'd be nice to have something physical rather than digital.
Ooh, and if anyone is up for the idea, we should maybe choose a theme, right?
OH, and also, postage. I know, I know. I tried calculating postage, and it will vary based on weight. So if we could keep it flat and relatively light, postage could cost about a little over 1 USD.
Also, I realize there are probably holes in this explanation, it's hard to explain it overt he internet and everything. So let me know if it makes no sense, ahaha.

Soooo yep, any suggestions would be awesome. If you're even slightly interested, let me know: comment here or email me or whatever.

Quick Update

Hey!
So for one of my classes, "Sophomore Seminar: Contemporary Practice" we had to somehow represent our "practice"... or something. It's all kind of confusing but this is a screencap of what I've made so far. It's rough around the edges, not quite finished and everything, but I was having a lot of fun making it so I thought I'd share!

Soooo I made this file in illustrator, and if you feel like adding on to it, GO FOR IT! but uh yeahhhh I had no idea where to begin so I just made this weird little thing. So feel free to do whatever you want to it.

Anyway, I just have it to download through sendspace. Hopefully it works.
