Helvetica

www.teacakedesign.com

Hi,

I just got back from watching Helvetica (the film), and it was really great. It was especially interesting hearing what these really influential designers thought of the typeface. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out!

And here's a link my teacher showed us today with some really great work on it: www.teacakedesign.com

This is kind of cool.

It's old, but my friend found it and I think it's pretty interesting.

Interesting Link

Hey guys,

So I found this blog which I guess is Mike Perry's blog for the class he teaches (I didn't even know he taught, but I guess he does...)

Anyway, I thought it was pretty interesting to look through and see what kind of stuff he is showing to his students and what assignments they are working on.

advertising

I don't remember if I posted this yet or not, buuut here it is.

http://copyranter.blogspot.com/

It's a lot of really awful ads and why they don't work, basically. Sometimes there's a good one on there, but mostly the ads are just really awful. It's a pretty fun site.

Richard Smykowski Lecture

Hi,

Thanks for making this blog active, everyone, it's great!

Yesterday we had a guest lecturer,Richard Smykowski, an mcad graduate (grad. in '00) working in New York as a graphic designer and art director.

He was really fascinating to listen to, and gave a lot of real-world info about how to get jobs, the interview process, and working with clients. He has worked for Vh1, Sci Fi network, Nickelodeon, and done a ton of freelance stuff as well.

He told us he would suggest sending straightforward emails to companies bout interests in jobs rather than calling, and gave us other advice that was very insightful. But by far, my favorite little piece of advice/wisdom/whatever was "Work creates work".

Anyway, it's getting to the end of semester here and the teachers are piling on the homework, but at least I've got Thanksgiving break next week to catch up!

Laurence Lessig

O.k. since everybody is introducing...I'm Filip from Belgium, I'm in my master year in graphic design at Sint-Lukas Brussels and I'm interested in a lot of stuff... At the moment I concentrate on cartography, processing, webdesign and typography. I have no website available yet but if anyone is interested I can post a pdf with some work ...
I'm 27 (yep an old fart)...but I started graphic design after having finished an education in corporate communication and a few years of working as a road manager in the music industry, being a high school teacher etc.

I'm also interested in everything related to the public sphere/domain. So that is why I wanted to post this link to Ted.com where you can watch a video of the talk Laurence Lessig did on his Creative Commons concept. In short it si about "creativity for all" a real hardcore "copyleft"-talk. So here's to the video!

Cheers!

Our work

hello from Sweden

Hi hi hi, it's really cold in Sweden.
It's snowing and I saw a deer running through the woods today.

My name is Yuta, a graphic design student in Sweden.
Originally from Japan, though.

I will post interesting things whenever I encounter them in my life. But we will see.

tales of mere existence

This is just one of his cartoons, he has a bunch more on YouTube and they're all super hysterical. I reccommend them.

Oh yeah, and here's his website.

Graphic design humor

Can you believe this!
t-mobile (a big european telecom provider) is actually 'claiming' the color magenta for it's company. No design should contain full magenta, ever!

Check out this protest site by a dutch company called lava:

Hilarious.

introduction

Hi, I'm Hannah! I go to MCAD with Alex and Julie and I'm a sophomore. My major is comic art, though I can't say there's too many artists I like in that area. Which might be a good thing? I dunno. All the other comic artists who like over, let's say, 15 comic artists are really, really awful at drawing and storytelling and the like. Soooo keep your resources limited? Haha. (Also, what are you doing sitting around reading comics when you could be out MAKING them? Fer serious, you guys...)

Umm, I really love animation but I'm sure I'd be terrible at it. I have no favorite animators though I'll always have a place in my heart for Brad Bird. His facial expressions are spot on along with the lip-syncing! Way to go, Brad, you little genius, you. (Actually I rented Iron Giant a while ago and still need to watch it...for the billionth time...)

Favorite bands, huh? The Beatles are my number one favorite, obviously, and I also like Green Day, the Wallflowers (I'M SEEING THEM TONIGHT!!), and a shitload of bands from the fifties and sixties. New music just generally sucks, I think.

Anyhoo. I'll leave you with a link to ponder over. It's Joshua Middleton, a basically cool guy, who makes beautiful pictures.

I think this is from the series Fables. I think.

I'm no good at titles

Hi guys,

So on Friday, we had an opening for an exhibition called "Project U.F.O." here at Mcad. It was a 2 week long school competition in which every class within the design department (illustration, graphic design, type, comics, advertising)had to participate. So each individual class had a different assignment, but it somehow had to be focused on an unidentified Flying Object. The 6 best pieces from each class would get into a school-wide show (2 of mine got in, Yayyyy!).

Anyway, the reception was a lot of fun. We had blacklights, djs playing in this round table that looked like a ufo, and creepy alien decorations everywhere. Unfortunately, we didn't ahve a ton of food, so as soon as the food was gone people moved on to this other reception down the hall with a ton of Irish food, hahahha.

In other news, I saw the Velvet Teen and the A-sides last night which was AWESOME.

OH, and I created a de.lici.ous account and yeah, it might be helpful.. I've got a ton of links to artists' websites and reference stuff, so check it out!

Bye for now,

Julie

PS: If you have any friends or know anyone else who want to contribute, let me know and I can send them an invite!

Introduction

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd introduce myself as well, to help clear up all the confusion. :)

I'm Alexandra (Julie's sister) and I am 19 years old in my second year at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Originally I was studying graphic design, but now I think I will study Interactive Media instead. (still with an emphasis in graphic design) I also did an internship screen-printing, which was super fun!

My favorite designer would have to be daniel eatock, although I also do really love Mike Perry and post typography (who gave the most entertaining lecture I've ever attended!)

On that note, here's a good link. It's 'Labor Camp' by Piotr Szhyalski the head of the interactive department at MCAD. I went to a performance piece of labor camp, and it was amazing. A lot of political imagery and a really solid performance. Its basis is in propaganda and the poetry of Mao Tse-tung. Anyway, check it out. I'd suggest the 'labor camp orchestra' section, it's a sort of beautiful musical collage, absolutely fascinating!

P.S. Here's my website:

alexandraroche.com

Oh, and as for music, my favorite bands are WHY? Radiohead, Ted Leo and the pharmacists, and about a million others!

Must a have

Of course you probably know this sites already.

I'm getting so confused

Ah man i get so confused about who is posting what. ANYWAYS i shall be the first to introduce myself. My name is Eline and I am currently in my second year studying graphic design. I am dutch, so hooray for whoever posted the dutch typography thing (haha). I go to the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. I like a whole lot of stuff, I do a whole lot of stuff (I'm being so specific , but it's a start). Two of my favorite bands among a million others are the smashing pumpkins and radiohead :D. I'm currently still setting up my own website www.elinewieriks.com , and once that is up I will let you guys know, if you are interested.

animatrix

Also, not to get annoying, but here is one more thing. If you can get past the narrator's super dry explanations, it's quite cool. (I love behind the scenes stuff!)

some links

Hokay, hokay, I'm not really sure what goes on this strange site since I didn't read all of Julie's first post but I get the feeling I can put up ANYTHING so that's what I'm doing (more or less)!! :D

This is a good site for information on animation and drawing and stuff like that. It sounds lame when I describe it, but really, it's very cool. http://sevencamels.blogspot.com/

If you don't know him yet (shame on you!) here's Craig Thompson's blog: http://blog.dootdootgarden.com/ And here is his other actual site (I like his blog better, personally only because you get text with the pictures): http://dootdootgarden.com/

Aaand what else... Oh this. http://drawn.ca/ (What is .ca anyways? Is that Canada? Whatevah.)

Underware

Underware have some nice fonts like Sauna, Dolly, ... and the free licensed Unibody 8 (screen font). At the second link you will find information about the workshops they organize all over the world. 2 years ago they were at my school where they had a workshop on lettering and cars (it's in the archive and called Automotive, Brussels). I think it looked really cool, but I couldn't participate because I was in my 1st Bachelor and they only worked with Master students.

Hi Everyone,

The blog is ready!
First of all, I'll just say this is 100% optional. I just thought it'd be a fun and super easy way for all of us to be able to communicate and get to know a bunch of people working on the same kind of things. If you don't have the time to contribute, don't worry about it!

If you are interested in contributing, I'll list some ideas of things we could accomplish with the blog, and some things we could post about. Please offer suggestions, let's get a discussion going.

- Links to artists' websites/blogs/anything that you find helpful or inspiring or just enjoy looking at.

- Photos and stories from lectures, gallery shows, or other events you attend.

- News or trends in the art/design world.

- Finished or in-progress work ( perhaps for a group peer critique?)

- If you have anything you would like to accomplish through the blog, feel free to tell us about it. Some ideas of collaboration have come up, as well as maybe an optional (and tiny) weekly/monthly illustration or project, which both sound splendid!

OH, ALSO, once you are made a contributor to the blog, why not post something to introduce yourself? What year of school you're in, what designers you adore, your favorite bands, etcetera.

Julie
